WASHINGTON—Former Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh will run for an open Senate seat in the fall, an official involved in national Democratic politics said, a move that could bolster the party’s chances in a race that had favored Republicans.
Mr. Bayh’s entry into the race will pit him against Rep. Todd Young (R., Ind.), who had been seen as a heavy favorite to win the race. Mr. Young was to challenge former Indiana Democratic Rep. Baron Hill, whom he had already defeated in a 2010 House race. The two men won their respective party primaries in May.
Mr. Bayh’s entry was made possible by a decision by Mr. Hill to withdraw from the race. On Monday, Mr. Hill said in an online posting that he didn’t want to “stand in the way” because “Democrats have a very real chance at winning the Senate seat, especially with a strong nominee who has the money, name identification and resources to win.” For the full article click here
