Their paths won’t cross, but two political luminaries who are polar opposites on policy will converge on San Antonio today.
Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be in the Alamo City briefly to raise funds.
Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney will addresses a business convention before he helps raise re-election funds for U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-Helotes.
The events are closed to the public, and neither Clintonor Cheney has invited news coverage.
Clinton, who declared her candidacy in April, starts the day at a New Mexico fund-raiser before traveling San Antonio, her first stop on a two-day, four-city Texas tour.
Clinton’s high-profile San Antonio supporters include José Villarreal, her national campaign treasurer; HUD Secretary Julián Castro, a strong contender to be Clinton’s vice presidential running mate; U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio; and Democratic National Committeefinance chairman Henry Muñoz III.
Vying for her party’s presidential nomination in 2016, Clinton has at least two dozen fund-raisers planned around the nation in a one-month stretch, with a goal of collecting $100 million by the end of this year, Politico reported Tuesday.
She’s expected here at an afternoon reception at a private club downtown where dozens of invited supporters will gather. Even with a small list of invitees, the event could raise a large sum to add to her collections later today in Dallas and tomorrow in Austin and Houston.
A GOP spokeswoman said Clinton is ignoring important policy questions during her Texas stops.
“Hillary Clinton continues to dodge questions on her secret email server and accepting donations from foreign governments, opting instead for closed-door fund-raisers and staged campaign events,” said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Ruth Guerra in a prepared statement.
“As Clinton’s tumbling poll numbers show, the American people do not trust her, and her ducking questions only makes it worse,” Guerra said.
Cheney, who served with President George W. Bush from 2001-09, is in town to speak to the NICE Systems Inc., meeting at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, which is expected to draw 2,000 participants.
At an undisclosed location, Cheney also will attend a fund-raising event for Hurd, the District 23 freshman who’s facing a tough re-election contest next year.
His visit prompted a protest by about a dozen veterans today. Gathered at a downtown VFW post, the veterans assailed Cheney for advocating the Iraq war.
“We are frankly insulted that you come to Military City, U.S.A., to raise money to further your agenda — at the expense of others,” said Navy veteran Hilario Henry Garcia, who served in Vietnam.
San Antonio is also on the radar of another Democratic presidential hopeful. On June 28, Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders plans a San Antonio visit as well.
Two other Democratic contenders have emerged — former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.
