Hillary Clinton has no competition to speak of in the 2016 Democratic primary, but her campaign is still courting congressional Democrats to get aboard her run for the White House.
Senior members of the former senator’s campaign have invited lawmakers to an informal meet-and-greet on Tuesday evening at the Capitol Hill home of Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.).
The event will feature campaign chairman John Podesta, national political director Amanda Renteria, campaign manager Robby Mook and top political aide Marlon Marshall — all of whom have deep ties to Capitol Hill. The outreach is part of a broader strategy by Clinton to strengthen ties with elected officials early in the 2016 cycle — an effort that began days after Clinton officially announced she would run for president earlier this month.
“There will be no formal presentation, just a chance for us all to be in the same room, catch up, and talk about the future over drinks and hors d’oeuvres,” Renteria wrote in an email invitation to members.
Clinton already has strong bonds with congressional Democrats, many of whom have complained that President Barack Obama has paid little heed to them during his time as president. In the 2008 Democratic primary, a number of Democratic lawmakers, including many members of the Congressional Black Caucus, endorsed Obama rather than Clinton. She’s all but assured of winning their allegiance this time, but still is taking no chances.
“We are in town!” Renteria wrote. “You may have already heard, but we wanted to make sure your boss got the invitation for tomorrow’s informal gathering at Congresswoman DeLauro’s home.”
