Some area Democrats are aiming to revitalize the party by starting a political club in Washington County.
The plans to have its inaugural meeting on May 6, with U.S. Rep John Delaney, D-Md, as the guest speaker.
Delaney, who represents Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, is exploring a run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md.
Thomas Ruhf, a Roherersville resident, will be the club’s first president.
Ruhf, who worked for the Delaney campaign previously, said the club plans to meet monthly to discuss substantive political and policy issues.
Ruhf said Democratic leaders who will also speak soon at the club include U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and U.S. Rep Donna Edwards, D-Md., both of whom are also vying for Mikulski’s seat.
“There are a lot more Democrats out here than people think,” Ruhf said. “We need to do something to energize them.”
Washington County had about 31,300 registered Democrats as of March.
“Membership is not necessary for this first event, but we would love to have you on board. If a donation to the treasury is possible, that would go a long way to get this club on its way,” Ruhf said in a Facebook message about the club.
Earlier this month, D. Bruce Poole, the former Democratic majority leader in the Maryland General Assembly and a Hagerstown attorney, was elected interim chairman of the Maryland Democratic Party.
Elizabeth Paul, a Democrat who ran for a delegate seat from legislative Subdistrict 2A in the 2014 elections, said the club was a chance for people to come together and discuss issues.
“It is about energizing people and keeping them engaged,” Paul said. “An active group can only help candidates like myself.”
The club’s first meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on May 6 at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown.
