A councilwoman who died earlier this month was declared the winner of her primary race in Allegheny County, the area of Pennsylvania in which the city of Pittsburgh is located.
Barbara Daly Danko, who died May 6 at the age of 61, posthumously defeated her Democratic challenger, Caroline Mitchell, in the Tuesday election, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Daly Danko earned 5,575 votes to Mitchell’s 4,015,results showed.
The Post-Gazette noted that Daly Danko won “with the help of party activists who encouraged Democrats to vote for the 61-year-old from Regent Square who died of cancer” and called her victory a “tribute.”
“I’m so gratified that her legacy of independence and of integrity resonated with voters, but I am sad that Barbara is not here to share this moment,” Terri Klein, chair of Daly Danko’s reelection committee, told the newspaper. “If she were here, I am sure that she would say, ‘Thank you. Now let’s get back to work.’ ”
According to the newspaper, Democratic committee members elected from within Daly Danko’s council district will now choose a substitute nominee to run in the general election. “No Republicans filed for the seat, so the Democratic nominee is likely to win in November,” the newspaper noted.
“Clearly she was well-respected by her constituents, which is pretty much as good as it gets for an elected official,” Jared Barker, the county council’s chief clerk and director of legislative services, told Reuters.
Nancy Mills, chair of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee, also called it a “sympathy vote” for the incumbent.
