Pelosi Statement on Memorial Day Observance

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 25:

“On Memorial Day, we honor through remembrance those who gave their ‘last full measure of devotion’ in service to our country and in the name of freedom.  Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder that our security and our liberty are possible because of the men and women in uniform of every generation.  We salute the fallen, from the Revolutionary War to present day, who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our ideals, in support of democracy, and in hope of creating a better world.

“From coast to coast, at home and around the world, we join the families of the fallen in sharing the stories and history of the lives we have lost.  The bravery, dedication and sacrifice of America’s sons and daughters who answered the call in times of war and peace are the embodiment of nation’s finest ideals.  It is because of their legacy, leadership, patriotism and valor that our freedom endures.

“In President Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address, he vowed ‘to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan’.  It is with that spirit we salute and reaffirm our sacred pledge: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran, no military family behind at home.  On behalf of a grateful nation, we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
