A GOP Monroe County Legislator Will Caucus With The Democrats

A Republican Monroe County lawmaker says she will start caucusing with the Democrats. Dorothy Styk represents the 18th district which includes parts of Perinton and East Rochester.

Styk was originally appointed to the legislature in early 2014, and she was elected to fill out the remaining year of the term last November. She is up for a full four year term this fall.

Styk says she is going to change her party affiliation and caucus with the Democrats because she feels the Republican majority is more interested in maintaining its political agenda than legislating. She says that almost without exception, Democratic proposals are dead on arrival regardless of merit.

With the change, the Democratic Caucus now holds 11 of the legislatures 29 seats. Although Republicans continue to maintain their majority, Democrats have in recent years been able to hold up bonding measures at times since the borrowing measures require a two-thirds vote.

Styk says despite her party change, she still believes low taxes and limited government.

Monroe County Republican Chairman Bill Reilich  issued a statement saying that Styk switched parties after becoming aware of growing support in the Perinton Republican Committee for another candidate for the 18th legislative district. He says that Perinton Republicans are expected to endorse Tanya Conley to run for that legislative seat. Conley now works for the Legal Aid Society of Rochester.
