Governance Coordinator (Democratic Procedures)

NUS champions students to shape the future of education – and create a better world.

We promote, defend and extend student rights. We fight discrimination, isolation and injustice. Through practical information and national action, we make sure students can thrive. We support and strengthen students and their unions. We are informed – developing research that influences national policy. We are active – taking on all the issues that affect students’ lives now and in future.

The Executive Office team at NUS is looking for an enthusiastic, highly organised and self-motivated candidate to provide support to NUS’ governing structures and democratic procedures.

About NUS

NUS is a voluntary membership organisation which makes a real difference to the lives of students and its member students’ unions. We are a confederation of 600 students’ unions, amounting to more than 95 per cent of all higher and further education unions in the UK. Through our member students’ unions, we represent the interests of more than seven million students.

As a democratic organisation representatives of member students’ unions annually elect the National President and other elected officers who lead the campaigning activity. NUS is also governed by its Board of Trustees who manage the organisation’s financial sustainability and provide strategic long term direction. NUS employs staff to deliver on the campaigning work as well as supporting and resourcing students’ unions.

About the team

The Executive Office team in NUS provides support to the leadership of NUS which includes the elected officers, trustees and directors who sit on NUS’ Boards/Committees and to the senior staff who coordinate the management of staff and resources to deliver the work. The team is responsible for coordinating the governance and democratic procedures across NUS.

About the role

The Governance Coordinator (Democratic Procedures) will be responsible for the effective support of the governing committees and their respective volunteers in NUS UK. This role will focus on the support for the National Executive Council, the democratic procedures committees and the elections committee (in total these committees have over 60 volunteers). This role will also focus on improving the experience of how students’ unions and students engage and participate in NUS’ governance.

The position is also expected to provide administrative support to other governing boards/committees and support for the NUS Leadership as part of the work of the wider executive office team.

We are looking for someone who is highly organised, fast working with excellent attention to detail and is able to adapt quickly to change. You should have demonstrable experience of providing administrative support, of what systems you have created or used to make things more effective and efficient, and that you are able to prioritise and complete tasks. You should have excellent IT skills and competent in (or ability to learn quickly) the Microsoft Office suite particular Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint. As the main point of contact for students’ unions and students who engage with NUS’ governing procedures we are looking for skills in good communication and good customer care with the ability to be assertive, tactful and diplomatic, and who can explain complex structures and procedures into ways that people can engage with.

The successful applicant will share our core values and relish the opportunity to work in a fast-paced democratic environment.
