Obama’s day: Nike and South Dakota

President Obama ends the week with a western swing Friday, including a free trade speech in Oregon and a visit to his 50th and final state: South Dakota.

Obama, who spent Thursday night in the Portland area, starts the day with a visit to Nike headquarters to “discuss how workers will benefit from progressive, high-standards trade agreements,” according to the White House schedule.

The president is pushing a new free trade agreement with Asian nations “that would open up new markets and support high-quality jobs both for Oregon small businesses and large companies like Nike,” the White House said.

Nike is using the president’s visit to announce that the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership with Asia would lower footwear tariffs and led to the creation of up to 10,000 manufacturing and engineering jobs.

Protesters, meanwhile, are expected to appear at Obama’s Nike event, arguing that free trade deals send U.S. jobs overseas.

After the Nike appearance, Obama — who has visited 49 states as president — completes the circuit with a trip to South Dakota.

Obama will be in Watertown, S.D., to deliver the commencement address at Lake Area Technical Institute, where he will promote his proposal to offer two years of free community college to qualified students.

“Lake Area Technical Institute is one of the top community colleges in the nation, and is recognized for rigorously preparing its students with the skills they need to compete in the 21st Century economy,” the White House said.

After the commencement, Obama heads back to Washington, D.C., arriving at the White House late Friday.
