People’s Biz: Cumberland County’s new Democratic Party chairman touts goals

The new chairman of the Cumberland County Democratic Party says he wants to focus on fundraising and precinct organization.

Grant Mitchell, who was elected to the local party’s top post in April, said he wants to better organize county’s 77 precincts with more registered Democrats who can participate in the county, state and national conventions and volunteer during election time with phone banking, voter registration and other activities.

“We believe it will make a fundamental difference to the Cumberland County Democratic Party,” he said, speaking at last month’s meeting of the Cumberland County Democratic Men’s Club at Luigi’s restaurant.

The other focus, he said, is to raise money for the local party on a year-round basis, not just during an election season.

“These two areas are all geared back toward getting the precincts organized in a real meaningful way where we can move voters to the polls and having resources to support our efforts in doing it,” Mitchell said.

He said the party has recently raised $2,300 in pledges and donations.

“So, we’ve made a good start,” he said.

Most of that money, he said, is from a new fundraising campaign he has started called the Blue Dogwood Club. The blue refers to the party’s traditional color, and Dogwood is a nod to Fayetteville’s famous tree and festival. He is asking for $100 donations, but smaller amounts will be gladly accepted, he said. Donors will get an appreciation letter signed by himself.

After his remarks, Mitchell said the local party plans to participate in some way in the coming Fayetteville municipal races. The city’s primary is in October, followed by the November general election. The period for candidates to file for municipal office will be in July.

The races are nonpartisan, meaning the primary and general-election ballots don’t carry party labels with candidates.

Just how the party will be involved, he doesn’t know yet.

“We are going to have a lot of good Democratic candidates running for municipal elections, and we are going to want to support them,” he said.
