Just 12 hours after New Mexico Senate Democrats announced they had come to an agreement that could make a special legislative session on capital outlay a possibility — Speaker of the House Don Tripp, R-Socorro, said their proposal was “stunning,” and “unfortunate.”
Late Thursday night Senate Democratic caucus leaders reached an agreementon the bill that would provide $265 million in state funding for projects statewide. But, Tripp called the agreement one-sided in a statement released Friday.
“It is stunning that the Senate Democrats would publicly trumpet ‘mission accomplished’ on a capital outlay deal by agreeing to their own proposal when no one else even knows the details of the proposal,” Tripp said in the statement. “It’s unfortunate that the Senate Democrats would rather govern by press releases than engage in good faith negotiations with the House and the Executive. We’ve been engaged from the beginning in efforts to compromise, but agreements must be agreed to by all parties. The House continues to be interested in discussing ways to reach a compromise with the Senate which requires negotiations in good faith by all parties.”
The issues on the table include a variety of proposals from how to pay for roads, make budget cuts, and fund senior centers.
Gov. Susana Martinez has said she would call a special session if the two parties could come to an agreement on the bill, which failed to pass in the waning minutes of the 2015 session. She has said a special session could cost $50,000 a day.
Late Thursday, Sen. Michael Padilla, D-Bernalillo, told Business First that Democrats have “met the governor and her initiatives exactly half way.”
