As the Democratic primary approaches its final contests, aides to President Barack Obama say the party’s top surrogate is eager to quickly step into what he sees as his chief role heading into the July convention: uniting the supporters of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
Mr. Obama has already begun drawing a contrast between Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump and the Democratic Party platform, an effort that has mainly focused on foreign policy and economic issues.
His attacks on Mr. Trump, however, are soon only going to expand to include a host of other issues, as Mr. Obama works in coming months to convince the Democratic coalition that twice swept him to the White House to support the party’s likely nominee, Mrs. Clinton.
But before he can fully step into the election – with plans to campaign far more than any of his recent predecessors did – Mr. Obama sees his key responsibility as a peace broker of sorts between the Clinton and Sanders camps. He’s also positioned as a rare sitting president with a higher job approval rating than the approval ratings of either of the presidential candidates likely to be on the ballot in November.
